The Downfall of the American Dream

Many changes have occurred in the job market. In my opinion, the number one concern was the dedication and loyalty employees had in their job. Job experience and willingness to learn were key issues in business. Employees were under the impression that if they kept their nose clean and did their job to the best of their ability, they would be recognized in the field of their expertise. Being at that level would give the loyal and dedicated employee a chance for promotion, with an increase in pay. Moving up the ladder was the goal of the American worker.

In the business world of today, promotions are still achievable, but not as frequent as in the past. In fact, companies are trying to decrease their staff, rather than hire new employees. The unemployment rate proves that.

For years the average American worker wanted to live the "American Dream". That dream was to secure a good job, work hard, own a house, send the children to college and save enough money to enjoy retirement. Working for someone who offered good benefits and a retirement plan were helpful in making those dreams a reality.

Before the economic crisis, a home was a good investment and there was a positive appreciation in it every year. With almost every improvement, the value of a home was rising. The average family was counting on values going up and up. The equity in a home could pay for college tuition, home additions and improvements. Knowing there was money in your home gave people a sense of security.

This present economic situation took a lot of those American dreams away from hard-working families. Many people have lost their jobs. Their homes went into foreclosure because they are unable to make their mortgage payments. Those who were fortunate enough to still have a job, are working harder to get by. Some families have to send their children to daycare in order to go to work. That expense does not help their financial situation. But sometimes it is necessary. Families who were able to keep their home now find that they owe more than their home is worth. Homes have lost their value and families are suffering. People are working harder, but have to spend more to survive. Some have also searched the web to find "work at home" jobs. Many have been successful, but unfortunately some have not. There are more two income families now, and a lot more to come before this economic crisis really gets better.

No one knows what the future will bring. Within the next few years and with any luck the job market will improve and those home values will increase. We just have to hope for the best.
